Climate Change and Our Regions Future, With Joelle Gergis. Hosted By Bangalow CWA

Event description

Join us for an important conversation with Dr. Joëlle Gergis, lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), on Wednesday, February 12th, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at Heritage House, Bangalow.

Dr. Gergis will discuss how climate change is already impacting our region, including the more frequent floods, shifting weather patterns, and intensifying fires. As we mark the five-year anniversary of the Black Summer bushfires and witness the ongoing wildfires in LA, it's clear that climate change is no longer a distant issue. The time to act is now.

The event will focus on community resilience, drawing on the experiences of the Bangalow Country Women’s Association (CWA), who have been vital in supporting our community through the 2022 floods.

This is an opportunity to learn, connect, and take actionable steps towards a more resilient future for our region. Seats are free, but limited—book now! Booking Link: https://events.humanitix.com/climate-change-and-our-regions-future-with-joelle-gergis-hosted-by-bangalow-cwa

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS HYPOTHETICAL: "IS IT ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE TO BE HUMAN?"

Moderated by Adam Spencer and Hosted by Some Fuamoli

Speakers: Philosopher Professor Peter Singer AC, Filmmakers Damon and Zoe Gameau (That Sugar Film, 2040), Heidi Lenffer (Cloud Control, FEAT), Gareth Liddiard (Tropical F***Storm, The Drones), Senator Peter Whish-Wilson (Greens), Allara Briggs Pattison (musician, Yorta Yorta woman), Marieke Hardy (Melbourne Writers Festival), Mat Morris (North Byron Parklands), Mara Bun (Australian Conservation Foundation)

Amid ongoing global inaction to curb human-driven climate change – humanity faces an existential crisis. Young people worldwide are increasingly engaged in activism, demanding climate action to preserve the habitat they will inherit. Voluntary human extinction movements are gaining mainstream traction, with proponents voluntarily ceasing to breed in efforts to allow Earth’s biosphere to recover. In this Hypothetical: “Is it environmentally responsible to be human?”, philosophers, environmentalists, artists and experts come together to negotiate philosophical outlooks, influence action and maintain progress in the thick of the climate crisis we face. Presenter and comedian Adam Spencer will take a group of specially selected respondents through a hypothetical exercise to collectively work through a moral dilemma, to aid in navigating future challenges.

Hypothetical: A Moral Dilemma at Splendour Forum was created by Helen Marcou AM (Bakehouse Studios), ethicist Dr Emma Rush (Charles Sturt University), Dr Catherine Strong (RMIT) and Jessie French.
